HOW TO SET UP YOUR EA
A Simple Guide to Installing, Testing & Configuring Your DCTraders EA
Welcome to DCTraders.nl.
Our Expert Advisors are designed to make automated trading easier and more systematic. However, before activating an EA on a live account, it is important to understand how the EA works, which market it is designed for, and which settings should be used.
Every broker can provide different market data, spreads, execution conditions and historical price information. For this reason, we strongly recommend performing a backtest with your own broker's data before running an EA live.
1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT EA
Every EA available through DCTraders.nl is developed for a specific trading strategy.
Before installing an EA, always check the product information carefully.
Each EA will specify:
📊 TIMEFRAME
The EA will indicate which timeframe it is designed for.
For example:
Timeframe: H1 — 1 Hour
If an EA is designed for the 1-hour timeframe, it should normally be used on an H1 chart unless the product description specifically states otherwise.
💱 TRADING PAIR
The EA will also clearly indicate which currency pair or instrument it is designed for.
For example:
Trading Pair: EUR/USD
or
Trading Pair: GBP/JPY
Always use the EA on the specified pair/instrument and timeframe.
2. INSTALL THE EA
After purchasing your EA, install it on your MetaTrader platform according to the installation instructions provided with the product.
Once the EA is installed:
Open MetaTrader.
Find the EA in the Expert Advisors section.
Open the correct trading instrument.
Select the required timeframe.
Attach the EA to the chart.
Check that automated trading is enabled.
Review the EA settings before activating it.
Do not immediately start live trading.
The next step is extremely important.
3. BACKTEST THE EA WITH YOUR BROKER'S DATA
Why is backtesting important?
Not every broker has exactly the same market data.
Differences can occur in:
Historical prices
Bid/Ask prices
Spread
Commission
Swap
Execution conditions
Liquidity
Server time
Available historical data
Because of these differences, the results of an EA can vary between brokers.
That's why we recommend:
Backtest the EA using the data and trading conditions of the broker you intend to use.
This gives you a better understanding of how the EA behaves under those particular conditions.
4. USE YOUR OWN BROKER SETTINGS
When performing a backtest, try to make the test as realistic as possible.
Where available, use:
Your broker
Your trading account type
The correct symbol
The correct timeframe
Realistic spread
Commission
Swap
The intended trading period
The more closely your backtest reflects your actual trading environment, the more useful the test can be for evaluating the EA's historical behaviour.
However, a backtest can never guarantee future performance.
5. SET YOUR DESIRED RISK
Risk management is one of the most important parts of automated trading.
DCTraders EAs can contain adjustable risk settings, depending on the individual EA.
You should choose the risk level that fits your own account, strategy and risk tolerance.
FUNDED ACCOUNT SETTINGS
For EAs that are intended for funded-account use, our standard starting configuration is 0.5% risk per trade, unless the individual EA's documentation specifies otherwise.
Example:
Account size: $100,000
Risk setting: 0.5%
A 0.5% risk setting corresponds to approximately $500 of account risk under the assumptions and stop-loss structure used by the EA.
The actual monetary risk can depend on the EA, position sizing, stop-loss distance, instrument and broker conditions.
IMPORTANT
The 0.5% setting is a starting configuration, not a guarantee that a funded-account challenge or account will remain within a firm's rules.
Every proprietary trading firm can have different:
Maximum drawdown limits
Daily loss limits
Maximum position sizes
News-trading restrictions
Trading-hour restrictions
Weekend rules
Lot-size requirements
Other trading conditions
Always check the rules of your funded-account provider before activating an EA.
6. TEST YOUR DESIRED SETTINGS
You don't have to use the default settings forever.
Depending on the EA, you may be able to adjust parameters such as:
Risk
How much risk is taken per trade.
Lot size
The position size used by the EA.
Trading hours
When the EA is allowed to trade.
Maximum positions
The maximum number of positions the EA can open.
Risk-management parameters
Settings that influence how the EA manages trades.
Other strategy parameters
Depending on the individual EA.
Only change settings that you understand.
Changing several parameters can significantly change the behaviour of an EA.
7. COMPARE THE RESULTS
After running your backtest, don't look only at the final profit.
There are many other important statistics to examine.
📈 PROFIT
How did the strategy perform over the selected historical period?
📉 DRAWDOWN
How large were the historical declines in the account?
🔢 NUMBER OF TRADES
Was there a sufficient number of trades to make the historical test meaningful?
⚖️ RISK / REWARD
How does the potential return compare with the historical risk?
📊 EQUITY CURVE
Was the historical performance relatively consistent, or were there large periods of volatility?
💰 COSTS
Consider spread, commission and swap where applicable.
8. DON'T OPTIMISE TOO MUCH
A common mistake when backtesting is trying to create the perfect historical result.
For example:
"This setting produced the highest historical profit, so I will use it."
A setting that performs extremely well on historical data may simply be highly fitted to that particular period.
Instead, we recommend looking for robust settings that make sense across different historical periods and market conditions.
9. FORWARD TESTING
After backtesting, consider running the EA on a demo account or another suitable test environment before using it with real money.
This allows you to observe how the EA behaves with your broker's:
Live market data
Spread
Execution
Trading conditions
Server environment
This can provide additional information before moving to live trading.
10. GOING LIVE
Once you have completed your testing and understand the EA and its settings, you can decide whether to activate it on a live account.
Before doing so, check:
✅ Correct EA
Make sure you have installed the correct EA.
✅ Correct pair
Make sure the EA is running on the specified trading instrument.
✅ Correct timeframe
Make sure the EA is running on the timeframe specified by DCTraders.
✅ Correct risk
Check your risk setting.
✅ Broker conditions
Make sure your broker supports the required trading conditions.
✅ Funded-account rules
If you are using a funded account, verify that the EA and its trading behaviour comply with the firm's current rules.
✅ Automated trading
Make sure automated trading is enabled.

🧠 REMEMBER: EVERY BROKER IS DIFFERENT
There is no single backtest that perfectly represents every broker.
Your broker may have different historical data, spreads, commissions, execution and server conditions.
That is why DCTraders.nl recommends testing your EA in the environment in which you intend to trade.
The purpose of a backtest is not to promise future results.
It is a tool that can help you understand how a strategy behaved historically and how different settings may affect its behaviour.
